Pro Bono means ‘for the public good’, and is a shortened form of the Latin phrase pro bono publico. It is work done without reward, usually to help the needy. Though best known in connection with the legal profession, it can apply elsewhere. We see top surgeons frequently consult without charge, dentists provide emergency services pro bono, and marketing consultants to Fortune 500 companies provide ongoing free assistance to small businesses.
For over ten years we have provided pro bono services to fledgling businesses. For start-ups we offer an extended first consultation to review a business plan, advise on setting up an effective record-keeping system and help with engaging accountants. Then we periodically meet to see how suggestions and systems are implemented. Many of these businesses have become commercially viable and some are now long-term clients. At least one partner is engaged weekly in some kind of pro bono activity.
